Face to face with dice

De auteur was op vrijdag 24 december 2010 te gast in het tv-programma KoffieMAX op Nederland 1. Hij liet een deel van zijn dobbelsteencollectie zien en sprak met presentatrice Myrna Goossens over het dobbelstenenspel.

How many people have, during an endless monopoly afternoon, paid attention to the die, the nonentity going from hand to hand, which did not often bring what was hoped for? Just a few, perhaps. Much more important were always the game board and pieces and naturally the score.

Already in 1990, Leo van der Heijdt tried to change this situation and enhance the prestige of dice. From base camp, his collection of about 2500 different dice of international and in many cases of age-old origin, he started an expedition through 5000 years of dice history and wrote down his findings in his book 'Oog in Oog'. In all its shapes, faces or appearances the unknown dummy, has become the main character at last.

'Face to face with dice', the result of ten more years of further collecting and study, will give an answer to a great number of questions and open people's eyes widely to the great impact dice have had in men's lifes and history.
This book is meant for anyone who loves little things, for inquisitive persons and for all those who like to play games. Dobbelstenen worden geregeld gebruikt, zowel bij kansspelen als bij gewone spelletjes. In de loop van de eeuwen werden er gewone, vervalste en kunstzinnige dobbelstenen gemaakt. Deze overzichtsstudie is een goede synthese die verschillende artikels en andere details bundelt tot een algemeen overzicht. Verzamelaars werken tegenwoordig steeds meer internationaal. Ook dat is te merken aan het boekje; het werd onmiddellijk in het Engels gepubliceerd

Jagen, vissen en dobbelen waren de belangrijkste bezigheden van onze voorouders, de Germanen. Het kansspel heeft de mensheid door de eeuwen heen geboeid. Dobbelstenen en kaarten hebben altijd een grote rol gespeeld in gokspelletjes. Toen we het verzoek kregen van de Verzamelkrant om een verzamelaar van dobbelstenen te bezoeken, waren we dus uiterst nieuwsgierig naar de man achter deze 'gelukszoekers'. We ontmoetten een archeoloog, die het verzamelhart op de juiste plaats heeft. Hij kocht zijn eerste dobbelstenen voor zijn kinderen in M³nchen, tijdens een zakenreis. Na het kopen van een setje benen dobbelstenen bij een antiekhandel, raakte hij ge´nteresseerd. Leo omarmde zijn nieuwe hobby enthousiast en toog naar de bibliotheek om zich beter te informeren over dit onderwerp, maar toen bleek er weinig of niets geschreven te zijn over dobbelstenen zelf.
We moeten Leo van der Heijdt beslist scharen in het rijtje van serieuze verzamelaars. Zo wijst hij ons op de plaatsing van de 'ogen'. Als we langs de kasten van Leo wandelen en naar zijn uiteenzettingen luisteren, begint de verzameling 'pas echt te leven'. Ons slechte karakter wordt nog maar eens bewezen als we bijzonder veel belangstelling hebben voor de collectie valse dobbelstenen van Leo.
Het op onderzoek uitgaan op verzamelbeurzen heeft geresulteerd in prachtige vriendschappen en tot angstige avonturen.
Leo beschreef zijn kennis in een boekwerk 'Oog in oog' dat tien jaar geleden verscheen en inmiddels is uitverkocht. Mede omdat veel buitenlandse belangstellenden vroegen om een Engelse vertaling, schreef Leo van der Heijdt 'Face to face with dice'. Het nieuwe boek is een echte aanrader voor verzamelaars. Zijn collectie is nu gegroeid van 2500 stuks naar 4000. Belangstellenden kunnen altijd contact met Leo opnemen.

When I first got your book from Kevin Cook, I only scanned it to see if it said anything about my 5, or 24 or 100. Kevin sent me a very strong letter to give to the patent examiner. Kevins letter points out that your book has an entire page of 6 sided dice illustrations, showing dice lay out patterns which are not the standard used today. I am sending the examiner a xerox of that page. I did not realise what a scholarly work your book was until I needed those non-standard illustrations. I was impressed when I realized how much you knew about dice, that I did not know. I have never looked back into their history, so what your book told, provided quite bit of new information for me. I hope you are enjoying brisk sales.
